Contraceptive methods that won’t make you gain weight

Dr. O.

Are you a newlywed who’s not ready to start having kids yet? Or you’re a veteran in the childbearing business who’s completed her family size and is looking for ways to prevent another pregnancy?
You’ve heard about so many different methods of contraception but they all come with horror stories of how Mrs A or Mrs B put on some weight after using them and you don’t want that to be you?
Here’s some good news, there are actually ways to prevent pregnancy without having to gain weight as a side effect.
Some of the available options are listed below:

1. Copper Intra-Uterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD): This method involves inserting a small contraceptive device made from plastic and copper into the womb to prevent pregnancy. The device should only be inserted by a health care professional.

It prevents fertilization (union of the sperm and egg) by causing toxic chemical changes in the sperm and egg before they meet thereby preventing pregnancy.

-The copper IUCD is a longterm reversible contraceptive method (it can prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years). It is a suitable option for women that desire longterm contraception.
-It can be inserted at any time during your menstrual cycle and can be removed to restore fertility at anytime pregnancy is desired.
-It is highly effective and starts working immediately after insertion.
-There is no evidence to show that it causes weight gain.

– It may cause heavy bleeding and cramps during periods following the first 3 – 6 months after insertion but this usually subsides afterwards.
– In the unlikely event that pregnancy occurs during it’s use, there is higher risk of an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy that occurs outside the womb).
– There is a small chance of risk of infection following insertion.

2. Bilateral Tubal Ligation (Female sterilisation): This method is popularly known as “having your tubes tied”. It involves surgically cutting and sealing the fallopian tubes (tubes that carry the eggs from the ovaries to the womb) thereby preventing pregnancy by interfering with fertilization (the egg meeting with the sperm).

-It is highly effective and can be carried out at any stage of the menstrual cycle.
-There is no evidence to show that it causes weight gain.
-It is a longterm/permanent method of contraception.

-It requires surgery in the theatre under anesthesia.
-There is risk of surgical complications: bleeding, infection.etc.
-Although this method is reversible, the reversal process is always effective. It should therefore be considered as a permanent method of contraception and only chosen as an option when a woman is sure that she no longer desires to have children.

3.Barrier methods: They are physical or chemical methods that prevent sperm from passing through the entrance of the womb to meet with the egg thus preventing fertilization. They include: male and female condoms, cervical cap, diaphragm, cervical sponge, spermicides.

-There is no evidence to show that they cause weight gain.
-Some barrier methods like condoms protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
-They can be inserted without the help of healthcare professionals and are readily available.

-Requires proper storage.
-May not be effective if used incorrectly.
-Having to remember to use it each time before intercourse.

Now that you’ve been informed, you can stop worrying about gaining weight while using contraception. Choose a method that works best for you.
