14th November 2015 is a day Banky Thompson would never forget. He was to get married to his girlfriend Tinu who he had started dating just six months earlier on that day and was very excited.
“Are you sure of what you’re doing? You barely know this girl” his younger brother Tim asked just before they headed to the venue, “this is the surest I’ve been my whole life” he said whistling away as he got dressed, “you’re my best man, you should be helping me get dressed, not developing cold feet on my behalf.” “I just want to be sure you’re happy” Tim replied, helping him to adjust his bow tie. “Thanks Lil Bro, now get dressed will you? We’re running late now” Banky replied.
Banky was not your usual playboy kind of guy, he was the “lovey dovey mummy’s boy” who would do anything to make his woman happy, he was the definition of a perfect man but strangely, most of his relationships never lasted more than a month or two, hence it was no surprise that he was overjoyed when Tinu beat the 3-month mark, he was in a hurry to make it official before she changed her mind and had made sure he proposed to her in grand style, no sane lady would have had the heart to say no to such a beautiful proposal, it was heavenly. He was committed to loving her and no other and he couldn’t wait to exchange vows so he could prove it to her.
The venue was beautifully decorated, they had chosen to have an outdoor wedding by the seaside with just a few guests present, Banky and Tim had made it to the wedding venue just in time as the guests were already seated and the minister was about to begin the ceremony, Banky spotted his parents sitting proudly in the front row, he smiled and waved at them as he made his way to his seat. Almost an hour later, his bride finally arrived looking as stunning as ever, hand in hand with her father, she walked majestically down the aisle, till she reached the altar where he handed her over.
The ceremony went on as usual and finally, it was time for the exchange of vows, “Do you Bankole take this woman to be your lovely wedded wife, to have and to hold..?” He looked into her eyes, squeezed her hands tightly, smiled and replied “Yes I do with all my heart” there was a loud applause from the guests, the minister continued “Do you Tinuola, take this man to be your lovely wedded husband, to have and to hold…?”
There was an awkward silence, the bride seemed to be lost in thought, her gaze was fixed but not on her groom, she took one last look at the object of her distraction and gently let go of Banky’s hand, “no, I can’t” she said shaking her head frantically and stepping away from him like she had just seen a ghost. She took to her heels running as fast as her legs could carry her with a confused maid of honour following closely behind while her groom stood there frozen at the altar, too embarrassed to face his equally embarrassed guests each with the same question on their minds,”what on earth just happened here?”
