Linda hurriedly got dressed in a nice tight fitting jump suit with 6 inch heels to go with it. “I have to look my best when everyone begins to take pictures of us” she thought, as she admired herself in front of the mirror.
An hour later, she walked into the hospital reception and found Kole anxiously waiting for her in his torn jeans and black vest .” Okay, why is he dressed like a farmer” she thought, looking disappointed. “I get that this is supposed to be a surprise but the least he could’ve done was to look good.”
“What’s going on?” she asked when she finally walked up to him, from the look in his eyes, she could tell something was wrong. “It’s Dad, he had a stroke” Kole replied looking worried. “what?!” she exclaimed, “ how did that happen? Dad was alright when I saw him last week”
“I’m just as confused as you are” he replied. Linda looked around secretly hoping that Simi and her other friends would pop out from behind one of the counters and shout “ SURPRISE!!”
“ I think we should speak to the doctor.” Kole said snapping her back to reality.
All she could do was nod as they made their way to the doctor’s office across the hallway.
They were greeted by a fine young man sitting behind the desk, “ Hello, I’m Dr. Jason, how may I be of help to you today?” “My Dad was rushed to the hospital this morning, we were told he had a stroke” Kole replied. “ Oh! That must be Mr. Daniels, I attended to him this morning.” “Yes, he’s Mr. Daniels, can you tell us a bit more about his condition?” Kole replied.
“Of course I’d be delighted to. You see Stroke is a medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or severely reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients and causing the brain cells to begin to die within minutes.” “Oh God! Not another lecture” Linda thought rolling her eyes. She turned to look at Kole who was leaning forward, listening intently to every word that came out of the doctor’s mouth like his life depended on it.
“It can be caused by a blood clot obstructing the flow of blood to the brain ” the doctor continued , “this is called an ischemic stroke or by a blood vessel bursting and preventing blood flow to the brain this is called a hemorrhagic stroke. There is also something known as a transient ischemic attack or “mini stroke”, this is caused by a temporary clot. ”
“What increases the risk of having a stroke?” Kole asked still listening attentively.
“Certain factors such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, obesity and old age can increase risk of having a stroke” replied the doctor.
At this point Linda who had totally lost interest in the conversation before it even started, began to get up to leave “ Thank you so much for your time doctor, we really have to see Papa now” she interrupted.
“Oh no! not just yet, I still have some important information to share with you”, the doctor said.
“Baby please be patient and let the doctor finish” Kole scolded her.
“Oh Lord, please make this guy disappear” she thought looking at the doctor in disgust.
“As I was saying before the interruption” the doctor continued excitedly, “ You may notice the following symptoms in a person with stroke that may occur suddenly: numbness or weakness of the leg, arm or face; confusion or trouble understanding speech; trouble seeing in one or both eyes ; trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
If you suspect someone may be having a stroke, an easy way to remember the symptoms is to use the acronym FAST
F is for Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
A is for Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Or is one arm unable to raise up?
S is for Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is his or her speech slurred or strange?
T is for Time. If you observe any of these signs, it is time to go to the hospital immediately.
“FAST ” Kole repeated, I won’t forget that in a hurry.
“FAST” Linda repeated in a sarcastic tone, “well we better start to leave here FAST before I start losing it” she thought. It had finally dawned on her that the whole stroke episode was real and there was no surprise proposal about to happen like she had imagined.
“ I’m glad you were able to learn something “ the doctor said with a smile on his face. “Your Dad was very lucky to have been brought to the hospital early enough, he’s responding well to treatment”.
“Thank God” Kole whispered under his breath. “ Thank you so much for educating us, I feel much better now”.
“It’s always a pleasure” the doctor replied with a huge smile on his face.
As they left the doctor’s office, Linda offered to drop Kole off at home since he hadn’t come with his car. “Are you still thinking of proposing today?” she suddenly blurted out on their journey home, “where did you get that idea? Kole replied looking astonished as though he had just been punched in the face. “I have my sources” she said with a mischievous smile on her face.
Kole paused for a while before finally replying, “I’m sorry to disappoint you Linda, but I’m not ready for that now”……..click here for episode 3
