How Malaria led me to my soulmate

Dr. O.

Ever heard the saying “Love resides in places you least expect to find it”? Well that’s the story of Yewande and Dami, two people living their separate lives, each with no idea what destiny had cooked up for them. Wendy as she was popularly called by her friends was a fun loving, beautiful young doctor, a hopeless romantic who loved happy endings. As a little girl she grew up reading romance novels and longed for the day her Prince Charming would come to sweep her off her feet, unfortunately, he seemed to be taking his time, eventually, she gave up on ever meeting him.

Dami on the other hand was a handsome young man, hardworking, confident, focused, sexy… the list goes on but, as you already guessed, he was every woman’s dream man. He had been in a couple of relationships himself but they had just never worked out, he was also looking to meet “the one” but she didn’t seem to exist, at least maybe not yet. Dami like Wendy had made up his mind to take a break from love, he decided to follow his dreams of being a successful producer and director of TV content until one fateful day when he fell really ill.

“Doctor a patient has just arrived and will be needing your attention” the nurse said informing Wendy. “Not again” Wendy thought, she was the doctor on call in the hospital and she seemed to be having what seemed to be her busiest call of the week, it was 12am and she was already exhausted from the day’s work, “I’ll be right there,” she said to the nurse, silently wishing she didn’t have to attend to the patient. She walked into the room half expecting to see an elderly patient as had been the trend the last few nights but to her surprise, she was greeted by a fine young man lying on the hospital bed.

“Good evening, I’m Dr Oni” she said introducing herself as she approached the patient, “Good evening” he replied managing to smile with all the energy he had left, he had just finished shooting his next TV project and had suddenly fallen ill afterwards, he felt extremely weak and had been running a temperature the whole day. Usually, he would never be caught dead in a hospital, but today wasn’t a usual day for him, he had driven to the hospital and turned himself in for treatment.

“I would like to ask you a few questions and examine you before running some tests if that’s ok with you” She continued, “yeah sure please go ahead” he said sitting up immediately, he had felt a connection with her as soon as she walked in and when she spoke he knew he wanted to be more than just a friend to her, he couldn’t help but notice how beautiful and innocent she looked, and how nervous she seemed, though she did a good job at trying to hide it. He made a mental note to himself not to leave without getting her number.

She sat at his bedside asking all the necessary questions, sometimes avoiding his stare because it somewhat made her nervous and tried her best to keep a straight face despite the jokes and funny side comments Dami was passing from time to time during their conversation. “So can I get your number?” He finally asked when she was done, she hesitated for a while, “or you’re not allowed to give your number out?” He quickly added giving her an escape route when he noticed she was thinking of what to say “Yes” she said as she headed for the door, “I’ll let you know once the test results are ready. In the meantime the nurse will give you some drugs.

Dami knew he should probably get some sleep after she left but he didn’t want to risk being asleep when she returned with the results, he wanted to maximise every opportunity possible to talk to this seemingly amazing woman he had just met, something on the inside told him she could be “the one” he had been searching for and he was willing to find out…
