Gonorrhoea ?” Funke queried, turning red.”You know what it is ,don’t you?” Trish asked. “Yes I do”, Funke replied. “But I’d still like you to explain further, seeing as you are a more senior colleague I could learn a few things from you.”

“That’s not a problem”, Trish replied. “As you already know, it is a sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria called Neisseria Gonorrhoeae which can be transmitted through sexual contact with the penis, vagina, mouth, or anus of an infected partner”, Trish said. “Hmmhmm”, Funke nodded. “So that means even people who practice just oral sex are also at risk?” “Of course they are” Trish responded with a nod. “I have always wondered, can it still be transmitted if ejaculation does not occur ?” Funke asked. “Ejaculation does not have to occur for gonorrhoea to be transmitted or acquired”, Trish said. “Oh I see”, Funke replied sombrely.

“Gonorrhoea can also be spread from mother to baby during childbirth and even people who have had gonorrhoea and received treatment may be reinfected if they have sexual contact with a person infected with gonorrhoea”, Trish explained further. “So how would I know if I have gonorrhoea?” Funke asked. “The truth is that a lot of times, people with gonorrhoea may not have any signs or symptoms and unfortunately for them they may never discover till they start having issues like infertility later in life”, Trish explained. “But the lucky women like you may experience mild symptoms like pain on passing urine, increased vaginal discharge which may be yellowish in colour, vaginal bleeding between periods, itching or burning sensation in the vagina and even pain while having intercourse. ”

How about in men?” Funke asked. “Men may notice a thick yellowish discharge from the penis, swelling or pain in the testicles and burning sensation or pain on passing urine”, Trish replied. “What are the symptoms for people who practice just anal or oral sex?” Funke probed further. “Well both men and women may notice discharge from the anus, anal itching, soreness, bleeding, or pain on doing a number two”, she said chuckling. “Infections from oral sex may manifest as sore throat in both sexes and don’t forget there is still the possibility of having no signs and symptoms at all”, she added.

“So what happens if one has gonorrhoea and doesn’t treat it?” Funke asked, “Untreated gonorrhoea can cause serious and permanent health problems ranging from risk of ectopic pregnancy in women, to infertility in both sexes” Trish responded, “Gonorrhoea can also spread to the blood and cause disseminated gonococcal infection which may be life threatening, it can even increase the risk of contracting HIV”. “Wow,I never knew gonorrhoea could be that dangerous”, Funke said. “I’m not trying to scare you but it is”, Trish replied, “and that’s why you must go to the hospital to get tested once you notice any of these symptoms or if you have a partner that has the symptoms or is being treated for gonorrhoea”.

Trish noticed the worried look on Funke’s face and quickly added, “not to worry, gonorrhoea is a curable disease, with the right treatment, it can be cured. But always remember, prevention is better than cure” she said, wagging her finger at Funke. ” How can I prevent it from happening again?” Funke asked. “Like I always say, the best way to avoid transmission of gonorrhea or other STDs is to abstain from vaginal, anal, and oral sex, or to be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with a partner who has been tested and is known to be uninfected, but if you can’t guarantee that, then you can reduce your risk of getting infected by using a condom”, Trish adviced. “Thank you so much Trish”, Funke said hugging her as she got up to leave.

She made up her mind that she was going straight to Tobi’s house to end the madness they called a relationship. When she finally opened his front door, she was greeted by moaning sounds of pleasure coming from an obviously very satisfied woman, they must have been so engrossed in their business as they didn’t even know they left the door unlocked and someone had walked in. She stood quietly for a while thinking what to do as the moaning got louder, she eventually took the padlock and keys from behind the door and walked out making sure she padlocked the door firmly behind her locking them both inside. She took the keys and flung it into a nearby gutter, “Goodluck receiving your own share of the national cake”, she hissed as she walked away vowing never to have anything to do with Tobi again.
