How my flight to Abuja led me into kidnappers’ nets 3: a thrilling story with a lesson on asthma

Dr. O.

Continued from episode 2

He drove further away from town till he reached a secluded bungalow in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by tall trees and bushes, by now the sun was already starting to set. “Get down” he said still pointing his gun at them, he dragged them both out of the car and led them to a very small dusty room inside the bungalow, the room was dimly lit with cobwebs in every corner,Annie screamed out of shock when she saw a disheveled looking woman sitting helplessly on the floor with both legs in chains, she immediately recognised her face from the missing persons announcement on TV, it was the Ambassador’s daughter. “shut up” the taxi guy shouted kicking her to the ground, before locking them up in the room and going away with their belongings and phones that he had seized while they were in the car.

They sat there in fear wondering what would become of them. A while later Annie started to wheeze, she was finding it difficult to breathe. “Oh my God,what is happening to her?” Rose asked looking concerned, “I think she’s having an asthma attack” Esther said starting to get nervous, “we have to do something, she needs her inhaler now” “Where can we possibly get an inhaler? We must be in the middle of nowhere ” Rose asked starting to get hysterical, “she must have one in her bag, I know she carries it with her everywhere,we just need to beg the taxi driver to let us have it” Esther replied banging desperately on the door in a bid to get the driver’s attention. “E be like say something dey worry una?” A hefty looking guard shouted opening the door and pointing his gun. “Please Sir, we need your help urgently” Esther said “wetin do your friend?” He said noticing Annie was in distress “she is having an asthma attack. Please we need to get her inhaler from her bag” “Asthma gini? Wetin be that?” “It is a lung disease that causes the airways of the lungs to swell and narrow.” “Hmm big big grammar. wetin dey cause am?” He said pondering over what he had just heard with his hand on his chin.

“Please Sir, there’s no time for me to explain now, if she doesn’t get the inhaler she might die” Esther begged “no problem, I go get am for you” he said leaving the room being careful to lock the door behind him, he returned shortly after with two bags in his hand “na which one get the inhaler?” , Esther pointed Annie’s bag out,he took the phone from it and handed the bag to her, she grabbed the beg, emptied it out and gave the inhaler to Annie, who felt relieved after a couple of puffs. “We really need to take her out, she can’t stay here” Esther pleaded, “that one no go work o” the guard said shaking his head adamantly, “let me explain her condition to you” Esther began, “The air you breathe passes from your nose to the airways before it gets to your lungs.

In an individual suffering from an asthma attack, the airways become smaller causing difficulty breathing, chest tightness and all the other symptoms experienced.” “What triggers it?” Rose asked, ” Different things can trigger an attack” Esther explained, “it could be triggered by smoke, dust, strong odours, eg, perfumes, stress, extreme weather conditions, strenuous exercises certain types of drugs and so many other things” “How long does an attack last for?” Rose asked again “The duration of an asthma attack varies, depending on the cause and how long the airways have been inflamed. Mild episodes may last for only a few minutes; more severe ones can last from hours to days.A mild attack can go away on its own or may require medication, typically a quick-acting inhaler. More severe attacks can be shortened with appropriate treatment.” “Who are the people at risk of having asthma?” “it occurs in both children and adults, it usually begins in childhood.

Those at risk of having asthma include people who have a family history of asthma or other related allergic conditions (such as eczema, food allergies), people exposed to tobacco smoke in their childhood , particularly if their mothers also smoked during pregnancy” “So how we go come take know if person beside us get asthma attack?” The guard asked clearly enjoying the lesson “the easiest way to recognise it is if the person is wheezing(this is a high-pitched whistling sound made while breathing),they may also be coughing, experience chest pain or chest tightness with difficulty breathing” “How can an attack be prevented?” Rose asked, “the easiest way is to identify what triggers the attack and stay away from it.” Esther answered.

“Asthma has no cure and it can flare up at any time but thankfully with treatment, most people who have asthma are able to manage it well. They can live normal, active lives and sleep through the night without interruption from asthma.” “JOSH” Annie shouted looking towards the door. “Bros wetin you dey find for here? Time never reach” the guard said pushing him out of the room. “Stop right there”said a police officer coming behind Josh, “the game is up” “sorry Bro, I had to” Josh said to the guard, “don’t bother trying to escape, the others have been caught” Josh said as the policemen handcuffed him and took him away, while Josh unlocked the chains holding Rose.

“Who are you?” Annie asked looking confused, “I’m an undercover detective, I work with the secret service” he whispered smiling, “I’ve been trailing these criminals for a long time, I had to pretend to be one of them to gain their trust. Let’s get you out of here first, I’ll explain everything when we are safely home.” He said kissing Annie on the forehead and leading the three women to one of the police cars parked outside.

So Josh used an innocent, love stricken, lonely, sex starved lady as a bait . What if the undercover operation went south? What if Joshua’s cover was after the ladies were in the same room with the Ambassador’s kid.
Lesson for lonely, love stricken, etc, babs!
