When mother-in-law becomes sidechick: a story of betrayal with lessons on uterine fibroids

Dr. O.

“Merry Christmas sweety” Didi said, “wish you were here to spend it with me, it’s going to be so lonely without you.” “I know dear but you know I have to be away on this business trip” Niyi replied. “It’s okay, I understand” Didi replied feeling disappointed. “So what are your plans for today?” “Work! work! work!” Niyi replied, “I have this proposal I’m working on for the meeting on Monday. What do you have planned?” He asked. “I’ll probably just go over to Nnenna’s, don’t want to spend Christmas alone” Didi replied.

“Don’t worry, you won’t spend next Christmas alone, I promise” he said blowing her a kiss. “Have to get back to work now.” “Ok dear, have a nice day” she replied hanging up, ignorant of the fact that her darling boyfriend who she thought was in Abuja was in fact right there in the same city with her, lodged in one of the finest hotels for Christmas. Niyi was a playboy, he was popular around town for changing women like clothes, he dated women of all ages, shapes and sizes. Everyone except Didi seemed to know about his womanising ways. Didi was timid and naive, she was raised single handedly by her Mum who she was very fond of. She lost her father when she was about a year old and her mother hadn’t bothered to get married again since then.

She met Niyi while in her final year at university, they had been dating for two years now and were planning to settle down soon. Niyi was her first and only man, she was so in love with him that she believed every word that came out of his mouth, she believed he was the best thing since sliced bread and trying to convince her otherwise was a waste of time. To be fair, Niyi treated her like a princess, he was just not one to stick to one woman at a time. His current stay in the hotel was funded by his sugar Mummy who constantly showered him with gifts and money. He had been seeing her for the past six months. Every time they would meet at one hotel or the other in a bid to keep their awkward relationship a secret from prying eyes.
After successfully convincing Didi of his absence from town, he invited his sugar mummy, Madam Rose, over to the hotel to spend the day with him, she had told him earlier that she had a surprise for him and he couldn’t wait to find out what it was, he was hoping it would be the new car he had been asking for. “Merry Christmas darling” she said giving him a peck on the lips when she arrived. “Merry Christmas to you too” he said letting her in with a huge grin, “I’ve ordered a special Christmas breakfast just for you,” he said pointing to the tray on the side table. “Awh! You’re so sweet” she said giving him a hug, “I have a Christmas surprise for you too” she said pulling him towards the bed to sit with her, “hmm, I can’t wait to see it” he said trying to peep into her handbag, “where did you hide it?” He asked excitedly, “right here” she said pointing at her abdomen and smiling,

“What do you mean?” He said looking perplexed. “I never in my wildest dreams imagined I’d ever say this again; I’M PREGNANT ” she screamed squeezing his hands excitedly. “No you can’t be” Niyi said pulling his hands away, “you can’t have my baby” he said moving away from her, “I’m in a serious relationship, this will ruin everything.” “How dare you say such nonsense after all I’ve done for you?” She lashed out, “I will find the gold digger and when I do, she will hear about this pregnancy before I finally kill her with my bare hands” she said picking her bag and storming out of the room.
