Cervical cancer is cancer affecting the cervix (the entrance to the womb and connection between the lower part of the womb and vagina).
It is one of the commonest types of cancers affecting black women. Here are 3 ways to prevent yourself from having cervical cancer:
1. Regular Cervical Cancer Screening: In any type of cancer, early detection is key. Cervical cancer is not an exception regular screening tests can help to detect abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix that are suspicious for cervical cancer. A PAP SMEAR TEST is the main screening test recommended for cervical cancer. Regular screening is recommended for women 25 years old and above every 3 years.

2.HPV Vaccination: as discussed in our previous article, Majority of cervical cancer cases are caused by HPV infection. Vaccinating against HPV will protect you against contracting the infection and reduce your chances of developing Cervical cancer. There are currently 2 major vaccines approved for the prevention of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection, they are called Gardasil and cevarix. HPV vaccine can be given to girls beginning at 9 years old.

3. Practice safe sex: This reduces your chances of contracting HPV infection and
in turn reduces your risk for cervical cancer.
