Jeff opened his eyes to find himself lying flat on the ground by the roadside, surrounded by a crowd of people ,he could barely remember how he got there, his head was banging seriously.
“Are you okay sir?” One of the by-standers asked looking at him pitifully while he remained silent blinking his eyes like someone who had just woken from sleep; he felt like he was in a trance.
“why are all these people surrounding me? What am I doing lying flat on the floor?” He thought to himself looking around, he tried hard to remember how he ended up on the floor but it wasn’t coming back, “sir can you hear me?” Another person from the crowd called out shaking him vigorously, “what is your name?”
“Who is this idiot asking me for my name and why is he shoving me around on the floor?” Jeff thought.
“Stop” he finally managed to speak out in protest, he’d had enough of the rag doll treatment. “how did I get on the floor?” He asked trying to pull himself up, “take it easy, I’ll help you” the second man that had spoken to him shouted, “you were almost knocked down by a car while trying to cross the road some few minutes back but somehow you managed to dive across the road just in the nick of time and landed here by the roadside” the man explained,
“almost hit by a car?” Jeff asked looking confused, “how?”
“I don’t know Sir, it seems the car was speeding uncontrollably, no one could even catch a glimpse of the driver, If I didn’t know better, I’d have thought whoever it was wanted to knock you down intentionally” the man said,
“Where are we now?” Jeff asked trying to figure out where exactly he was, “we’re on shaw street, standing just opposite crest holdings”
“Crest holdings?” Jeff asked raising his eyebrows, he suddenly realised where he was, “isn’t that Franklin’s office?” He wondered to himself, “he reached to get his phone from his pocket and sure enough it wasn’t there, “could you help me up? My friend works just across the street” Jeff asked the man.
“Sure why not?” he replied, ” I’m glad you have someone close by, I was worried about you going home on your own after the trauma” he said helping him up.
Few minutes later, they were both in Franklin’s office, “what happened to you?” Franklin screamed when he saw Jeff looking very disheveled and limping into his office with the man from the accident scene supporting him, “I told you, I felt like someone was following me, but you didn’t believe me” Jeff hissed limping towards the chair, “what on earth has that got to do with you looking like a wounded farmer?” Franklin asked sizing him up, “I’m really not in the mood for your crap now” Jeff snapped, thanking the other man for his help before he left him behind, “I’m just happy to be alive”….
Sniper sped down the street and joined the highway without looking back, he had been following his target for a while, waiting for the right time to strike; finally the perfect time presented itself but his target narrowly escaped.
“Damn” he thought hitting his hand on the dashboard, he felt like shooting himself in the leg with the gun he was holding, how on earth could he miss such an easy target?
Still driving at full speed, he was thinking of the best way to explain his failure to his client when his phone rang, “talk of the devil” he muttered under his breath before answering the call, “Sniper speaking” he said, “is the target down?” the caller asked, “not yet” he replied to the caller’s disappointment, “what do you mean not yet?” the caller shouted, “this should’ve been our best bet” the caller grumbled, “it was supposed to look like an accident”,
“I know” Sniper stammered, “it still baffles me how he was able to escape, I could’ve sworn I had him right where I wanted…”
“Shut your mouth” the caller interupted, “I should never have wasted my time with you in the first place.”
” I still plan to finish the job tonight” Sniper argued, “Forget about finishing any job, my contract with you has just been terminated.” the caller barked, “refund my money first thing tomorrow morning. I’ll get rid of the target by myself” the caller said hanging up the phone. “Poor guy!” Sniper thought to himself, “I wonder why my client wants him dead so bad”…
