Back pain is more common than you think. Millions of people worldwide are currently undergoing back pain and it is reportedly the leading of cause of disability in people younger than forty-five. A problem not exclusive to the aged, backache can be experienced by young people too. Back pain can be mild or severe – severe enough to hinder daily activity. - Bad body posture. If you do spend long hours sitting in a day, the way you sit would go a long way to determining whether you would end up with back pain or not. Slouching would make your back really hurt. The best sitting position is to sit upright, keeping your back straight. Stooping and not standing upright would also lead to back pain. Not assuming a good body posture makes your muscles strain to keep you balanced and the resultant effect of that strain is the pain you feel
- Not exercising. Regular exercise helps to keep your back in good shape. It makes your muscles flexible. It stretches, strengthens and repairs the muscles that help to support your back. When you do not exercise, you make your back prone to pains and aches
- Studies reveal that there is a strong link between smoking and back pain. Smoking increases your chances of developing back pain and makes your back pain chronic and more severe than non-smokers
- Being overweight/excess abdominal fat. Obesity is a risk factor for back pain. Being overweight could cause you a lot of problems including musculoskeletal and joint related pain. Your extra weight contributes strain to the muscles and ligament in your back. A study reveals that those who have a large waist size are particularly at risk for lower back pain. The excess weight in the abdomen pulls the pelvis forward and strains the lower back, leading to lower back pain
Other than the above reasons, back pain could be as a result of a medical condition. When you have made certain lifestyle changes and you do not feel relieved from your back pain, then you need to visit your doctor.
