Nobody likes it when it’s hot. Excessive heat can lead to heat rash, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To avoid the unpleasant effect it has on the body, people often employ various means. One of these means is the installation of air-conditioners in offices, cars and homes. Air conditioners can be such a relief, however, they can also affect the health in significant ways.
According to a report on ScienceDaily, using air conditioner when the weather is hot can affect quality of sleep. The report revealed that when airflow from the air conditioner is directed at the body, it impacts the quality and depth of sleep; regardless of the velocity of the air flow.
Not having enough sleep has a number of side-effects, they include: weight-gain, headaches, blurry vision, moodiness, weakened immune response and excessive daytime sleepiness. According to a medical report, sleeping less than five hours at night increases the risk of death from all causes by 15%. A brain deprived of sleep may be less capable of detecting positive emotions than the more rested one. Also, lack of sleep has been identified as one of the causes of tragic accidents.
Air conditioning have been reported to aggravate respiratory conditions, cause indoor air contamination and aid in the spread of disease. While it may be difficult for some persons to avoid the use of air conditioners, the negative effects it has on the body can be reduced if it is used for short periods and when most necessary.
