Lara was escorted back to Aunty Fanny’s place by inspector Bankole, they were greeted at the door by Aunty Fanny, “I’m so sorry dear” she said giving Lara a hug, “I’m sure it must’ve been really difficult for you seeing his lifeless body”
“It was” Lara replied, “I need to get some rest now” she said walking past Aunty Fanny to the guest room.
“Thanks for bringing her home” she said turning to face inspector Bankole, “I guess you should be taking your leave now”
“Not exactly ma” inspector Bankole replied, “I need to take Lola back with me, she is wanted at the station for further interrogation”
“Further interrogation? Why?” Aunty Fanny questioned, “hasn’t she given her statement already?”
“She has but there’s a new development” Inspector Bankole replied, “what new development?” Aunty Fanny asked, “Lola is now a suspect” inspector Bankole replied, “suspect? For what?” Aunty Fanny asked looking confused, “suspect for the murder of Mr Balogun” inspector Bankole replied,
“You don’t know what you’re saying. How can you call that innocent girl a suspect?”
“Mrs. Balogun gave us some information that points her out as a suspect” he replied, “Lara? Is she alright at all?” Aunty Fanny said, “please disregard anything she says, she’s not thinking straight at the moment” Aunty Fanny advised, “I’m afraid I can’t the inspector general has requested I bring her now”…
“Do you think Mrs. Balogun’s allegations may be right?” the inspector general asked inspector Jaja after she had left with inspector Bankole, “she may not be far from the truth, I’ve been thinking myself, why did she not come to the police station after discovering something fishy was going on? Why did she have to wait till Madam called before speaking out if she really wasn’t hiding something?” inspector Jaja replied,
“You have a point there and she seemed to be reluctant to disclose the information about her escapades with Mr. Balogun, she might actually have a hand in his murder” the inspector general reasoned within himself.
“Let’s wait and see what she says when she comes; the coroner’s report is also on it’s way and I can’t wait to wrap up this case.”
the inspector general said.
Their discussion was suddenly interrupted by a knock at the door followed by a police officer walking in, “the coroner is waiting to see you sir”
“Speak of the devil” the inspector general said, please let him in.
“Okay sir! I’ll do that right away” the officer replied.
“Good day sir! Please sit” the inspector general replied offering the coroner a seat,
“Good day” he said sitting, “I have the autopsy report here with me”
“That’s great! What did you find?” the inspector general asked, “he died from exsanguination” the coroner announced, “what does that mean?” the inspector asked, “it means he bled to death” the coroner explained, “he was stabbed multiple times in the abdomen; somehow the murderer got his liver, it was badly damaged. You know the liver is an organ that sits under the rib cage on the right side of the abdomen, it is essential for digesting food and getting rid of toxic substances in the body, because of the large blood vessels in the liver, any injury to the liver especially injuries involving the blood vessels results in massive bleeding which leads to hypovolemic shock, a situation in which a decrease in the blood volume occurs leading to a decrease in blood supply to organs in the body, thereby causing them to stop functioning, eventually, this situation could lead to death. This is exactly what happened in Mr. Balogun’s case.” the coroner explained.
“But you know the interesting thing?” the coroner asked, “what?” the inspector questioned, a piece of jewelry was found at the scene of the murder, we found it entangled with one of the cufflinks on Mr. Balogun’s shirt sleeves ” the coroner explained,
“What’s the significance of the Jewelry?” the inspector asked, ” from our investigations, we could tell that Mr. Balogun fought to save himself from the murderer, there was clearly a struggle, hence his torn clothes; we suspect it was during this struggle that the piece of jewelry broke off the owner’s neck and got caught on one of Mr Balogun’s cuff links.” the coroner explained further,
“So are you saying whoever murdered him was probably wearing the jewelry?” the inspector asked, “exactly!” the coroner replied, “it gets even more interesting, the piece of jewelry is a gold necklace” the coroner said, “ok, what’s so interesting about that?” the inspector asked looking confused, “it has a heart shaped pendant with the name LOLA written on it”…
