MUST READ: 3 more reasons for missed or late period besides pregnancy and when you MUST see a doctor.

There are a number of factors that may be responsible for late or missed periods besides pregnancy. These factors include stress, rapid weight loss or low body weight, birth control drugs and thyroid problems. Besides these factors, there are yet others and they include:

  • Obesity. In the same way having a low body weight can affect your menstrual cycle, being obese can also affect it. Being overweight or obese can cause your body to produce too much of the hormone estrogen. This can cause your periods to cease for several months and it can also result in heavy, irregular periods
  • Excessive exercise. Exercise is good for you and in fact a necessity for healthy living, yet too much of a good thing is bad. If you exercise too much, your body would not produce enough estrogen to complete your menstrual cycle
  • Illness. If you are sick either with a simple or serious illness, ovulation can be delayed or not happen at all. This means your period may either come in late or not at all

Delayed or missed periods may be a sign of something serious and it also may not. Because it might be a little bit difficult for you to understand why exactly your period is late or why you skipped a period, it would be best to see your doctor.

Seeing your doctor is even more important especially when:

  • You have missed several periods and you are sure you are not pregnant and too young to be menopausal
  • You have gained or lost weight rapidly
  • You experience other symptoms
