Cancer is one of the world’s leading killers. With over a hundred types, this disease is responsible for thousands of deaths yearly. Although the disease can be treated, these deaths nevertheless occur because a lot of cancer patients are diagnosed too late. Once a cancer has spread, it is often harder to treat successfully, reducing the person’s chances of survival.
Some of the reasons for late diagnosis of cancer are: low awareness of cancer signs and symptoms, and delay in seeing a doctor when these signs and symptoms appear. Cancers do not just develop suddenly; there are usually signs and symptoms that indicate that there’s a problem but these are often ignored.
It is very important that you do not take any symptoms lightly or for granted, no matter how simple they may appear. It is always safer to err on the side of caution. In other words, it is safer for you to be especially careful with your health rather than take risks that may turn out dangerous or fatal.
Here are some of the most commonly ignored cancer symptoms. If you do experience any or some of them, it does not necessarily mean that you may have cancer, but it is best that you see your doctor right away:
- A sore that does not heal
- Unexplained weight loss
- Persistent cough
- Frequent joint pain
- Persistent eye pain
- Changes in bladder and bowel habit
